Technique Page - Multiple Exposure

Multiple exposure can be achieved by various methods. The image below is a quadruple exposure and was created by putting the camera on a tripod in a dark room and opening the shutter for around 10 seconds. I then asked my friend to pirouette in front of the camera while I manually fired my hand held flash gun 4 times. The result is one digital image that contains 4 exposures.

The whole process is all created in camera in this image above but multiple exposures can also be done in Photoshop. For example if I wanted to produce a an HDR image where all areas of a scene is evenly lit I can set up the camera on a tripod and take multiple images of the same scene in the same position but bracket my exposure. I then bring each shot into a different layer on Photoshop and mask out the unwanted areas on each layer.  Focus stacking uses a similar technique to make all areas of an image pin sharp with no areas out of focus.
