Research Log

Christopher McKenney:

http://www.christophermckenney.com/work

Here  we see a cult of what seems like witches placing a baby into a  coat in the middle of a forest in the snow.
Christopher McKenney is a horror surrealist. In most of his work he has removed section of peoples bodies to make them seem more surreal. In lots of his photos you also can not see the full  face of the person he is taken. This works well because it distances the viewer from the model and adds to the surrealism of the photos taken.

Thomas G. Anderson:

https://www.facebook.com/darkartbythomasgandersonphotography/photos_stream?ref=page_internal

This is one of Anderson's photos from his seeing is believing shoot where we have a child dressed up in a clown costume with a red ballon. Anderson has then decided to make the image black and white and make it seem like an old image which adds to the horror factor of the image.
Thomas G. Anderson use demonic imagery in his photos to install fear within his viewer. The part of this work which I find very interesting is his use of clown costumes and black hooded figures. Most of his work is converted to black and white. This makes his work seem older then it is which alows for the horror affect to work even better.

Danielle Tunstall:

http://www.danielletunstall.com/portfolio/

Here we see that in the image the person is doing a completely normal task but is missed half of the skin on their face. This adds to the affect of the image because it allows to make a seemingly normal looking task more interesting because we have a rather extreme case of the persons face missing allowing for the focus of the viewer to be moved form the headphones to the face itself.
Danielle Tunstall is a horror photographer who takes photos of people to try and inspire fear into the viewer of the image. She does lots of close-up shoots of people with heavy make-up on them which makes them look either dead or very horrific to the viewer. This makes it very interest because it allows for the viewer to look deep into the photo and think about what the photo is about.

Joshua Hoffine:

https://joshuahoffine.wordpress.com

Here we see that Joshua Hoffine has decided to create
Joshua Hoffine uses fantasy horror in most of his shoots. Some of his photos are based on stories that we hear from children about the monster under the bed or the creature under the stairs. This makes some interesting photos because it brings to life those childhood fears which we have all felt. Some of his newer work focus more on fantasy. An example of this is INNSMOUTH where he has used fish men in Victorian London surrounding a man and are about to attack him. This shows that even if you are an adult we all fear a massive fish mob.

Morgan MacDonald:

In this image we see they have mainly lit up the centre of the image allowing the brain and the pentagram to be seen.
Morgan MacDonald uses lots of realistic looking props to add to the fear factor of the images. In the above image we can see that she has used a brain and when we go to the perspective of the person it would be a brain within an inverted pentagram which is a symbol in modern satanism to summon demons. She uses peoples basic knowledge of horror to add to the fear factor of all of her images.

Danielle K.L. Anathema:

http://www.anathemaphotography.com/Art-Portfolio/The-Hunted/1/thumbs

This image we see a woman creating clothing from human skin which she has just taken from the person behind them.
Danielle K.L. Anathema uses lots of models and props to create an unfriendly and hostile environment for the viewer to see. This then has a phycological affect on the viewer which makers them feel uncomfortable with the image being observed. As we can see in the above image we have a delusional woman creating clothing out of human skin. This makes the viewer fearful because it plays on peoples anxiety and also on peoples fears because this is something that some people around the world actually do but because they act so normal in public it makes the viewer paranoid while they rate looking at the image.

Decayed Pixels:

https://pandajones.carbonmade.com/projects/4906695#10

In this image we see that the person has decided to use a model with their mouth sealed shut with metal piercings.
Decayed Pixels takes photos of some rather creepy photos which make people feel rather scared because it affects them on a phycological level. The image above shows a woman with ferret. The woman's mouth is shut so we know from this that she can't eat and from her eyes we can tell that she is hungry and wants to eat the ferret but can't. This makes it seem cruel to both the woman and the ferret because she can't eat and the ferret was sent in to be eaten. This makes the viewer feel out of place allowing for there to be a greater phycological affect on them.

Lauren Freedman:

https://www.facebook.com/lalalaurenphotography/photos_stream?ref=page_internal

Here we see a rather creepy image of a little girl licking the blood from her lips.

Lauren Freedman is another horror photographer who uses elements from different horror genes to create a horrific photo. As are can see n the image above there is a little girl covered in blood and hiding in a bush. This makes the images seem rather graphic and some people who see this photo might take offence to the image because it invokes a parental feeling in the image for the girl but it also makes them fearful because the girl looks like she is the cause to the blood due to the fact that she is licking the blood from her lips.

Eolo Perfido:

http://popcornhorror.com/eolo-perfidos-clownville/

In this photo we see that the photographer has decided to do the typical cheek pulling but while doing this it reveals his sharp fangs.
Eolo Perfido mainly makes his models up into clowns. This creates rather creepy images because they use fully grown men wearing clown make-up whilst wearing creepy clothing or in some cases not wearing any clothing. Theses images create rather creepy looking images like the one above where we have a guy with full clown make-up which would normally be happy, but when he opens up his mouth we see he has fangs in his mouth with creates a fearful image.

Emerson Quinn:

http://www.emersonquinn.com/keyword/horror%20photographer/

This image shows a scene where there are some dolls with parts of their head missing which creates a rather gory image even though they aren't using actual people only dolls.
Emerson Quinn uses dolls in lots of his work. With theses dolls he then creates different types of murder scenes and also creates lots of different types of torture scenes. These images then create a rather fearful scene for the viewer much like the above photo where we can see that they have decided to cut the top part of the head which then has caused blood and parts of brain to spill out.

David Love:

https://www.facebook.com/davidlovephotography

Here we see a very well known scene from Carrie.
David Love does lots of work with cosplayers. One of his projects was a horror shoot from scenes found in some well known horror movies. His work doesn't inspire fear but it creates a rather interesting photo because he creates photos which are identical to scenes found in well known movies.

Stefan Gesell:

https://www.facebook.com/fotosym

In this image we see that they have a model covered in  mud and looks like she has come out of a ruined abandoned city.
Stefan Gesell is a German photographer who takes photos of dark futuristic fantasy worlds. He pays close attention to the make-up and environments in his works. He uses a combination of lots of different fantasy genres to create rather interesting fantasy images which some can inspire fear where others can inspire you to create your own image.

Amanda Norman:

http://blog.amandanorman.com/gallery-2/

Here we see that the he photographer had increased the red on the left side of the image and has made it look like there is a blood red rust on the chain mail fence. She has also decided to make it so that the rest of the image is in black and white to make it appear to be creeper.
Amanda Norman is a well known UK gothic photographer who takes photos of both landscapes and also creates rather interesting images of people using both make-up and photoshop.

Kareva Margarita:

https://www.facebook.com/Karevamargo

Here we see a woman standing in the sea holding a strange looking fish. The fish and her clothing make it seem fantasy like because both are not the norm in the real world but for those people who have knowledge on the types of things found in the fantasy realm this would be something that people, would normally see.
Kareva Margarita is a fantasy photographer. She mainly takes images of the more typical fantasy setting. Examples of this in her work are she takes photos in massive fields which gives it a medieval affect. This works well to intice her adience because it plays on their interests.

Richard Mosse:
In this image we see Richard Mosse has changed the colour  of the leafs to red. This creates a beauty in the image even though there are solders within the image.
Richard Mosse is a photographer who captures he beauty and the tragedy in war and destruction. Richard Mosse does a lot of colour manipulation in his work to allow for the beauty of some of his photos to come out. It is an intresting approach because normally photographers only capture the rawness of the photo whereas Richard Mosse captures that then changes it to match with the beauty found in the land.

Susan Schroder:

http://susanschroder.com

Here we see that they have a mirror world image where the reflection is the dark and light opposites of each other.
Susan Schroder has over 20 years of experience with art and due to this she has been able to combine her artistic side with her love of fantesy to create fantesy photography that you would envy. With her talent she has managed to create wonderful photographs of fantasy worlds which the viewer wishes they could experience in real life. This makes her work one of the best in my opinion because it intices the viewer to keep looking at her work and keep updated with all of her projects.

Alexandra Sophie:

https://www.facebook.com/AlexandraSophie.photography

Here we see one of her more conceptual pieces of a motorbike driving towards a woman lying on the floor.
Alexandra Sophie is a more rounded photographer who explore lots of different types of photography. The one I am going to focus on is her paranormal photography because it intrests me the most and is most relevant to my project. In her paranormal works she experements with a wide range of paranormal events from aliens to ghosts. This shows a wide understanding of the subject she has chosen and gives the viewer a greater understanding on what is counted under in the paranormal.

Federico Chiesa:

http://www.federicochiesa.com

Here we see a re-creation of Freddie Krueger in an unusual setting.
Federico Chiesa is a talented Italian photographer who experements with extreme fashion and also has lots of conceptual work which involve a horror and fantesy aspect. This makes her work effective on the viewer because it makes them want to view more of her work. Some of her work also works well to inspire people to try and re-create some of her work.

Pure Black Love:

https://www.facebook.com/pureblackloveart

Here we see some body paint done in the style of a demonic form.
Pure Black Love mainly uses full body painting as costumes to inspire fear into their viewers. The amount of detail in the art created is outstanding and creates an awesome horror fantasy atmosphere. This adds to the affect on the audience by increase the amount of adrenaline in their system increasing the horror factor as they look though the work. This makes the viewer want to view ,ore of the work because of its amazing affect on them.

In this image we see that they have taken a rusted door and made it seem like someone is trying to escape or grab someone from inside it.
Urbex Clown is a photographer who specialises in scene of decay, rot and abandonment. They take fairly normal settings and then creates very tense, uncomfortable scenes. This then makes the viewer tense because the whole atmosphere around the image is tense. This then stays with the viewer when ever they see something reminiscent of that scene it creates the same scene they saw which then inturn makes them feel uncomfortable and afraid.

  1. Hello well done you have got some good research here, I would like you to analyse the photographic approaches of the artists and determine some of the techniques, visual approaches used that makes the images work… You will need to do this as you should be looking at how you might learn from the photographers you have researched. See Assessment objectives AO1 and AO2. I have also got another photographer for you to consider his name is Joel Peter Witkins whose images are extremely macabre… You should think why an images repulsive from an aesthetic perceptive, not just for this image but for the others that you have posted… This will also help to develop your ideas. A final suggestion for photographers is to look at Weegee who recorded death crime photographs in the 1930's… You might also look at Researching Jack the Ripper. Please do not delete this post. These photographers are suggested as they are established and there is some substantive research on them from which you should gain ideas or at least more of an insight on why certain images cause the viewer to recoil…
