Research On Amanda Norman

Amanda Norman:
One of the main reasons I have chosen to do research on Amanda Norman is because she does both landscape images of Gothic objects and areas, and she does horror portraits of people. So she is a great combination of the landscape horror and portrait. Most of her work is in black and white which I think works very well because it adds to the Gothic nature of her images and it also adds to the scare value of the images she creates.
This image shows a rather creep graveyard covered in fog. This makes the overall image scary because the dead could emerge from the ground at anytime.
This image depicts a rather creepy graveyard with a long road in the middle that disappears off into the fog. The fog and frost are the two main features of the image that make it scary and Gothic.
Here we see an angel atop of a stone. The darkness of the image makes it hard to really see any defining features of the angel we only have the basic wing structure because it is illuminated by the light in the background.
Here we see a rather dark image of an another angel in a graveyard. She is overshadowed by the church itself which creates a rather gloomy and eerie setting.
Amanda Norman has influenced me to get a wider range of horror imagery. Mainly to get more images of Gothic landscapes and structures. This would work very well with my work because it would then show a wide variety of images in my work. This would be ideal because then it also allows me to explore into the realm of making horror photos while only using landscapes or man-made structures.

The best way to sum-up Amanda Norman would be to use the word Gothic. This is the style of work she mainly uses and it works very well with all of her images because she is very well experienced with taking these kinds of photos.

Research On Emerson Quinn

Emerson Quinn:
I have decided to my research on Emerson Quuinn because they do lots of work with dolls. This is an interesting thing to do because it allows for the photo to be whatever you want it to be. This is because there are no restrictions when working with dolls because they are objects. Also one of the things I like about Emerson Quinns work is they they depict the dolls in rather horrific scenes which cause fear to be produced by the viewer of the image.
By doing this it allows for people imagination to play out and fill in the scene with someone from their own memory's which then really messes people up because they start seeing people they know in these scenes. This then adds to the level of fear and also makes the viewer paranoid which is something I find interesting.

Here we have a scene which depicts two dolls hanging in a bathroom. This is a very well known scene because this is something that happens in the real world and the photographer has also created the scene in the same place where people commit this.
Here we see a rather conflicting scene of abuse. This image invokes a reaction of disgust in most people because this is looked down upon. This scene makes the viewer really think because even though it is a very conflicting image it makes people think about the problems that we still face in the world.
Here we seem to have a continuation of the image above where the abuse has ended but the affect still lingers.
This image is just creepy because we have two dolls in the image and only one in focus. The one in focus is staring at the other one. This creates a sense of foreboding in the image because we can tell just from the look that something bad is going to happen.
This photographer has influenced me to use dolls in some shoots because you can manipulate a doll to get the image you want and then you can allow for the viewers brain to fill in the rest of the photo for you. Also this photographer has influenced me to try and achieve some controversial images because I feel like they would be good photos to have and it would make people think about that single problem and they would then voice own opinion.

I would say that the best way to sum up this photographer is to uses the word controversial. This is because lots of their work with dolls is  is very controversial and would offend lots of people. Even though they are controversial I still think that they are a good photographer because they are pushing the bounds that they can photo and are also getting interesting images from their work.

Research On Urbex Clown

Urbex Clown:
Urbex Clown is a photographer who mainly specializes in scenes of decay, rot and abandonment. The way they work is they will take an image of a fairly normal environment and then create a very tense and uncomfortable scene. What has inspired me about this photographer is the fact that they can take a normal looking place and change it into a scene that makes people feel uncomfortable every time they see a scene like the image in public. This has then made me want to try and re-create this affect be making a scene seem very uncomfortable and then having that then linger with them affecting them for every time they see it creates that same original atmosphere of fear.
In this image we see that Urbex Clown has used an abandoned house as the stage for his photograph. Here we have the model standing in the middle of a corridor wearing a a clown mask. This image confuses the brain because we have the opposite of what lots of his photos are. We have an image that would normally inspire fear but because we have a window with a light coming though it we aren't scared when we should be.
Here we a very basic picture where we have the model extending their hand out towards the camera. This makes the photo creepy because its almost as if the model is reaching out of the image and trying to grab you the viewer. This affect works well if the thing trying to reach out is scary in some way.
Like the image above we have another forth wall break where the model in some way is interacting with the viewer. In this one we have a clown pointing at the viewer. The fact that they are in front of a circus it is almost as of they are inviting the viewer into the circus, but due to the creepy mask the clown is wear and the angle of the camera it creates a rather eerie feel in the image.
In this image we see a couple standing next to monument. This image is rather creepy because we have one of them wearing a clown mask while the other is wearing clown face paint. Also because the light is coming from behind the monument it creates a glow from behind the monument.
This photographer has influenced me to try and re-create their forth wall breaking images where the model is trying to interact with the viewer. Lots of Urbex Clowns photos involve someone wearing a mask. I would like to do a shoot where I use the same model but with lots of different masks but while they are doing the same action in each photo. They do lots of their photos in public places and in places of significance.

The best way to sum up Urbex Clown is to say they surround themselves in a shroud of darkness which is then transferred into their photography. They then use that to create an atmosphere of creepiness and an eerie attitude  which I think works very well with their sort of photography.

Research On Christopher McKenney

Christopher McKenney:
I have chosen to do extended research on Christopher McKenney is because his work interests me the most. The reason he interests me is because he is a horror surrealist. Lots of his work involves people wear something strange or doing something strange then he removes sections of their body to add a scene of surrealism to the piece. In all of his photos he always has the faces in the photo fully or partially covered, this adds to the mystery of the image. By doing this it distances the viewer from the model which is something I would like to attempt. Most of Christopher McKenney works has a sort of American Horror Stories feel to it, this is because it has that underline supernatural tone combined with the general 20th middle America vibe to it.
In this image we see that Christopher McKenny has decided to make it look like his model is submerged in the ground. They also have a cloth around their face covered in water which indicates they have been water boarded which makes the image feel creep. What makes this image surreal is the fact that it is unlikely that the whole of the persons body is submerged but it is likely to just be the head which makes this image really creepy because it looks like a severed head  but it is still moving.
Here we see a rather demonic image. This seems to be weird because we have a woman handing her child to a strange floating figure wear a black hooded cloak. What makes this image particularly effective is the pale arm reaching out to the child and the mother with no hesitation handing the baby to it. This makes the viewer think that something supernatural is going on.
This image portrays an image of a woman in a wedding dress holding a fake baby while being surrounded by tiny coffins normally used for babys and small children. This makes the viewer think that maybe the woman has lost her own child either once or many times, (going on the number of coffins), which then makes us feel empathy for the woman. If we follow along with the rest of Christopher's work then it makes you think even harder about the image and forces you to think that maybe this woman is insane and she may have killed her own children. We can gather this because of the wedding dress and the fake child she is holding gives us a strong indication that she is mentally unstable. The image itself is also covered in one late shadow which adds to the darkness of the image. This creates a dark atmosphere in the photo and makes the viewer feel uncomfortable when viewing the image.

Here we see a very plain image of a person standing in the middle of a pathway, because this image is so plain it has the greatest affect on the audience. This is because it creates an environment for the viewer that makes you wonder about what is really going on in the photo. The fact that we know there is a face in the sheets and horns coming out of it make this image extremely surreal and has the greatest affect on the viewer.
This photographer has influenced me to try and make own work more surreal. This is because I think it works well and also helps to achieve that supernatural, horror feel that the photographer was trying to achieve. Lots of his photos have that typical 20th century middle America feel to it due to the clothing used and the scenes they have used. This is something that I think takes their work past that of other peoples because it creates a very complex atmosphere around the image. This has influenced me to try and re-create this type of atmosphere with some of my own images.

To summarise Christopher McKenneys style of photography the word I would use that best describes him is surrealism. He uses this to create an eerie and surreal scene which envelops the viewer in the atmosphere of the image and also works very well to inspire people to try and re-create what they have done in some of their own work.

Research Log

Christopher McKenney:

http://www.christophermckenney.com/work

Here  we see a cult of what seems like witches placing a baby into a  coat in the middle of a forest in the snow.
Christopher McKenney is a horror surrealist. In most of his work he has removed section of peoples bodies to make them seem more surreal. In lots of his photos you also can not see the full  face of the person he is taken. This works well because it distances the viewer from the model and adds to the surrealism of the photos taken.

Thomas G. Anderson:

https://www.facebook.com/darkartbythomasgandersonphotography/photos_stream?ref=page_internal

This is one of Anderson's photos from his seeing is believing shoot where we have a child dressed up in a clown costume with a red ballon. Anderson has then decided to make the image black and white and make it seem like an old image which adds to the horror factor of the image.
Thomas G. Anderson use demonic imagery in his photos to install fear within his viewer. The part of this work which I find very interesting is his use of clown costumes and black hooded figures. Most of his work is converted to black and white. This makes his work seem older then it is which alows for the horror affect to work even better.

Danielle Tunstall:

http://www.danielletunstall.com/portfolio/

Here we see that in the image the person is doing a completely normal task but is missed half of the skin on their face. This adds to the affect of the image because it allows to make a seemingly normal looking task more interesting because we have a rather extreme case of the persons face missing allowing for the focus of the viewer to be moved form the headphones to the face itself.
Danielle Tunstall is a horror photographer who takes photos of people to try and inspire fear into the viewer of the image. She does lots of close-up shoots of people with heavy make-up on them which makes them look either dead or very horrific to the viewer. This makes it very interest because it allows for the viewer to look deep into the photo and think about what the photo is about.

Joshua Hoffine:

https://joshuahoffine.wordpress.com

Here we see that Joshua Hoffine has decided to create
Joshua Hoffine uses fantasy horror in most of his shoots. Some of his photos are based on stories that we hear from children about the monster under the bed or the creature under the stairs. This makes some interesting photos because it brings to life those childhood fears which we have all felt. Some of his newer work focus more on fantasy. An example of this is INNSMOUTH where he has used fish men in Victorian London surrounding a man and are about to attack him. This shows that even if you are an adult we all fear a massive fish mob.

Morgan MacDonald:

In this image we see they have mainly lit up the centre of the image allowing the brain and the pentagram to be seen.
Morgan MacDonald uses lots of realistic looking props to add to the fear factor of the images. In the above image we can see that she has used a brain and when we go to the perspective of the person it would be a brain within an inverted pentagram which is a symbol in modern satanism to summon demons. She uses peoples basic knowledge of horror to add to the fear factor of all of her images.

Danielle K.L. Anathema:

http://www.anathemaphotography.com/Art-Portfolio/The-Hunted/1/thumbs

This image we see a woman creating clothing from human skin which she has just taken from the person behind them.
Danielle K.L. Anathema uses lots of models and props to create an unfriendly and hostile environment for the viewer to see. This then has a phycological affect on the viewer which makers them feel uncomfortable with the image being observed. As we can see in the above image we have a delusional woman creating clothing out of human skin. This makes the viewer fearful because it plays on peoples anxiety and also on peoples fears because this is something that some people around the world actually do but because they act so normal in public it makes the viewer paranoid while they rate looking at the image.

Decayed Pixels:

https://pandajones.carbonmade.com/projects/4906695#10

In this image we see that the person has decided to use a model with their mouth sealed shut with metal piercings.
Decayed Pixels takes photos of some rather creepy photos which make people feel rather scared because it affects them on a phycological level. The image above shows a woman with ferret. The woman's mouth is shut so we know from this that she can't eat and from her eyes we can tell that she is hungry and wants to eat the ferret but can't. This makes it seem cruel to both the woman and the ferret because she can't eat and the ferret was sent in to be eaten. This makes the viewer feel out of place allowing for there to be a greater phycological affect on them.

Lauren Freedman:

https://www.facebook.com/lalalaurenphotography/photos_stream?ref=page_internal

Here we see a rather creepy image of a little girl licking the blood from her lips.

Lauren Freedman is another horror photographer who uses elements from different horror genes to create a horrific photo. As are can see n the image above there is a little girl covered in blood and hiding in a bush. This makes the images seem rather graphic and some people who see this photo might take offence to the image because it invokes a parental feeling in the image for the girl but it also makes them fearful because the girl looks like she is the cause to the blood due to the fact that she is licking the blood from her lips.

Eolo Perfido:

http://popcornhorror.com/eolo-perfidos-clownville/

In this photo we see that the photographer has decided to do the typical cheek pulling but while doing this it reveals his sharp fangs.
Eolo Perfido mainly makes his models up into clowns. This creates rather creepy images because they use fully grown men wearing clown make-up whilst wearing creepy clothing or in some cases not wearing any clothing. Theses images create rather creepy looking images like the one above where we have a guy with full clown make-up which would normally be happy, but when he opens up his mouth we see he has fangs in his mouth with creates a fearful image.

Emerson Quinn:

http://www.emersonquinn.com/keyword/horror%20photographer/

This image shows a scene where there are some dolls with parts of their head missing which creates a rather gory image even though they aren't using actual people only dolls.
Emerson Quinn uses dolls in lots of his work. With theses dolls he then creates different types of murder scenes and also creates lots of different types of torture scenes. These images then create a rather fearful scene for the viewer much like the above photo where we can see that they have decided to cut the top part of the head which then has caused blood and parts of brain to spill out.

David Love:

https://www.facebook.com/davidlovephotography

Here we see a very well known scene from Carrie.
David Love does lots of work with cosplayers. One of his projects was a horror shoot from scenes found in some well known horror movies. His work doesn't inspire fear but it creates a rather interesting photo because he creates photos which are identical to scenes found in well known movies.

Stefan Gesell:

https://www.facebook.com/fotosym

In this image we see that they have a model covered in  mud and looks like she has come out of a ruined abandoned city.
Stefan Gesell is a German photographer who takes photos of dark futuristic fantasy worlds. He pays close attention to the make-up and environments in his works. He uses a combination of lots of different fantasy genres to create rather interesting fantasy images which some can inspire fear where others can inspire you to create your own image.

Amanda Norman:

http://blog.amandanorman.com/gallery-2/

Here we see that the he photographer had increased the red on the left side of the image and has made it look like there is a blood red rust on the chain mail fence. She has also decided to make it so that the rest of the image is in black and white to make it appear to be creeper.
Amanda Norman is a well known UK gothic photographer who takes photos of both landscapes and also creates rather interesting images of people using both make-up and photoshop.

Kareva Margarita:

https://www.facebook.com/Karevamargo

Here we see a woman standing in the sea holding a strange looking fish. The fish and her clothing make it seem fantasy like because both are not the norm in the real world but for those people who have knowledge on the types of things found in the fantasy realm this would be something that people, would normally see.
Kareva Margarita is a fantasy photographer. She mainly takes images of the more typical fantasy setting. Examples of this in her work are she takes photos in massive fields which gives it a medieval affect. This works well to intice her adience because it plays on their interests.

Richard Mosse:
In this image we see Richard Mosse has changed the colour  of the leafs to red. This creates a beauty in the image even though there are solders within the image.
Richard Mosse is a photographer who captures he beauty and the tragedy in war and destruction. Richard Mosse does a lot of colour manipulation in his work to allow for the beauty of some of his photos to come out. It is an intresting approach because normally photographers only capture the rawness of the photo whereas Richard Mosse captures that then changes it to match with the beauty found in the land.

Susan Schroder:

http://susanschroder.com

Here we see that they have a mirror world image where the reflection is the dark and light opposites of each other.
Susan Schroder has over 20 years of experience with art and due to this she has been able to combine her artistic side with her love of fantesy to create fantesy photography that you would envy. With her talent she has managed to create wonderful photographs of fantasy worlds which the viewer wishes they could experience in real life. This makes her work one of the best in my opinion because it intices the viewer to keep looking at her work and keep updated with all of her projects.

Alexandra Sophie:

https://www.facebook.com/AlexandraSophie.photography

Here we see one of her more conceptual pieces of a motorbike driving towards a woman lying on the floor.
Alexandra Sophie is a more rounded photographer who explore lots of different types of photography. The one I am going to focus on is her paranormal photography because it intrests me the most and is most relevant to my project. In her paranormal works she experements with a wide range of paranormal events from aliens to ghosts. This shows a wide understanding of the subject she has chosen and gives the viewer a greater understanding on what is counted under in the paranormal.

Federico Chiesa:

http://www.federicochiesa.com

Here we see a re-creation of Freddie Krueger in an unusual setting.
Federico Chiesa is a talented Italian photographer who experements with extreme fashion and also has lots of conceptual work which involve a horror and fantesy aspect. This makes her work effective on the viewer because it makes them want to view more of her work. Some of her work also works well to inspire people to try and re-create some of her work.

Pure Black Love:

https://www.facebook.com/pureblackloveart

Here we see some body paint done in the style of a demonic form.
Pure Black Love mainly uses full body painting as costumes to inspire fear into their viewers. The amount of detail in the art created is outstanding and creates an awesome horror fantasy atmosphere. This adds to the affect on the audience by increase the amount of adrenaline in their system increasing the horror factor as they look though the work. This makes the viewer want to view ,ore of the work because of its amazing affect on them.

In this image we see that they have taken a rusted door and made it seem like someone is trying to escape or grab someone from inside it.
Urbex Clown is a photographer who specialises in scene of decay, rot and abandonment. They take fairly normal settings and then creates very tense, uncomfortable scenes. This then makes the viewer tense because the whole atmosphere around the image is tense. This then stays with the viewer when ever they see something reminiscent of that scene it creates the same scene they saw which then inturn makes them feel uncomfortable and afraid.

Blurring - Image Bank

The main blur in this image is the ride in the background  where we see the ride is blurred. The way the photographer has done this is by keeping the camera stationary while the ride was in motion. By having a longer exposure this allows for the camera to capture more of the motion in the image. I would guess that the exposure was a few seconds because we see that there is a woman who has slight blur because she was standing still but because there was a long exposure it recoded all of her slight motions.

In this photo we see that the photographer has decided to have the exposure on for a long period of time at least 15 seconds or longer because we see that there is motion blur from the buses and the bus exterior itself is barely visible. This allows for the motion of the bus to be shown. Also it makes the lights more prominent in the image allowing for there to seem like a solid stream of light.

Here we see the car is in focus with the background blurred.  This image would have been created by having the camera moving along with the car allowing for the car to be in focus and the background to be blurred.

Here we see that the exposure was only on for about one second because we see that everything else is in focus except for the bus which would have been moving faster then everything else. The motion captured behind is the afterimage of the bus. When we see an afterimage we know that  there has been movement captured in the image.

Here we see an example were the photographer has panned with the car to create an image where the car is in focus and the background is blurred.

This image we see that the photographer has quickly zoomed out to create a blurred background.

High Key - Image Bank

In this image we seen a woman with white silk around her face which increase the whites in the photo.

This image we see that the photographer has decided to use a pale model with white eyes and white hair.  This adds to the whites in the image making it even more overexposed.

Here we see another photo that is over exposed but the model has a black or dark sheet of clothing around them. This still makes the image whites come out but the added slight contrast makes it interesting.

The whites in this image have been over exposed to create an interesting contrast between the blacks in the yes and the black in the eyelashes and the eyebrows.

In this image we see a a baby with a large pair of headphones that also has the white overexposed to create a high key image.

This photo here is extremely over exposed because we can see that the white of the cloth has become one with the white background. This merges very well with the rest of the image and seems seamless.

Slow Sync - Work Diary

Evaluation:
Slow sync flash combines a burst of flash with a slow shutter speed.

Progression:
If I were to continue this then I would like to explore slow sync with a multiple objects at the same thing to see what the affect would be on each section. I would like to have a diagonal line going across to see what the affect on each object is with slow sync on. I would also like to see what would happen if I were to use slow sync to show movement in some images.

Here we see that the biker is in full focus but the background is blurred.  This allows for the focus of the viewer to be moved to the bike and you don't have to pat much attention to the background. It also shows us that the bike is moving very fast though the forest because everything else is blurred.

Here we see the person has decided to play around with light graffiti by getting a source of light and spinning it around themselves. This makes it look like there is a ring of fire suspended in the air around them which makes a rather interesting image.
