Minimum Depth Of Field - Image Bank

This image here is very interesting because there is a reflection of the ladybug in the river makes it very interesting. The main point of focus in the image is the lady bug which creates an interesting centre of the image.

Here we have a flower in the foreground of the image which contrast the background. This is because they had a nice flower in the foreground of the image and then a gravel car park in the background of the image which creates a contract of nice and bad.

In this image we see something rather strange. The photographer has seen this and thought it would make an interesting image which it has.

This image here portrays a row of dominions. It is an interesting image because it is also of a sequence that being the sequence in which the dominos are in.

In this image we see that someone has taken a photo of a water droplet that has collected at in the centre of the leaf. It is an interesting image because we can see the massive drop in the middle and also can see the small specks of water dribbling into the middle of the leaf.

This image shows a minimum depth of field of the backboard of the bench. It is an interesting thing to have a focus on because it is unusual and not a normal thing someone would take a photo of.

Technique Page - Sequencing

Sequencing is when you have a group of images that show a sequence of events that happens throughout the photos.

First you need to decide on a sequence in which you want to capture. Next set up the camera so it can view the entire sequence. Take a photo of the first part of every movement and continue taking photos of the desired movements. When in photoshop make each photo 5cm in length and open a new page of 5.5cm times the number of photos you have for the sequence. Drag the photos into their appropriate place in the new page and crop so there is an equal frame around them all.

The aim is to get a row of images that show an initial movement which end in a final one with the stages of movement in-between.

The image I have above is of a sequence of events in which I directed. It started with them standing up, then going into jumping jacks along the rom of people with having the last person doing the jump the first person collapses to the floor and then that movement continues on till the end.

Connecting Essay 1

Reference Image:
In the reference image I thought it was an unusual image to have. Bob Carlos Clarke who is the original photographer of this image and also the inspiration for me taking the picture. The image is called 'The Lady Vanishes' and is from his album 'Obsession'. The main points that are intriguing about this photo is the Vanishing aspect of the photo. We have an image of her covered in the bandages on one side then an image of her slowly disappearing. This creates a short sequence for the viewer to look at.

My Image:
For this image I cut out the face on this shot and made a duplicate layer on the image behind and then moved it around until I got the kind of concave empty looking face. This gives it a rather creepy and Gothic feel. Like most of my photos this was also changed into black and white because it has a greater affect on the viewer. This shoot was taken in my home studio with a new textured fabric backdrop which when the light reflected off the background created the same texture on the background as on the model. Some of the connotation of my image can be seen to be closely linked to the genre of "The Mummy" in horror and the idea of the dead coming back to life. This genre can be seen in my work because there is no head within my image, its more like an empty shell of a person which could indicate decay within the body of "The Mummy".

The Connection:
There are lots of connections with between the two images, this is because my image was inspired by the top image. The bandages are the next main connection because they are the same colour and they are covered in the same style of the first image. The next point that links the two images is the vanishing sections of the two images. The difference between that though is that in the first image has half of the body vanishing and in mine I have only the face disappearing. Also both of the images have been changed into the black and white. When we compare my image to that of Bob Carlos Clarke we see that mine is rather more dark and Gothic. Whereas in Bob Carlos Clarke's image we see the woman as a bit more of the typical walk way model due to the stilettos on her fit and the way in which she is positioned.

Technique Pages - Animation

Animation is the technique of photographing successive drawings or positions of puppets or models to create an illusion of movement when the film is shown as a sequence.

To do an animation you have to take photos of something developing or changing, but you need to ensure that the camera is still and that the lighting stays the same. Next you then need to open up photoshop. Next click view timeline and create a new layer, keep creating layers and make each layer more visible. Then change it so that all are played continually and then change the size to 20 and the result ion to 72. Save it as a web gif and upload to photo bucket and then copy the link into your blog.

The aim is create the effect that the image is moving or that something is happening in the image creating a moving image.

This image was from my shoot last year but I felt that it worked well to have it as an inverted animation. This image works well with my them that I plan to continue this topic as well which is horror.

Technique Page - Location Portraiture

Portraiture is the recording of an individuals appearance and personality, whether in a photograph, painting or sculpture, or other medium.

The starting point is to get a model and take them to a required location. Then using a wide-angle lens hold the camera close to there head and focus on the head. You then move the camera so that some of the background is in the image and take the photo.

The aim of this is to get an image of the persons head and part of the background.

In this image above we have an example from one of my shoots. In this we see that we have the background out of focus and the model in focus. The result being a portraiture of the model.

Work Diary - Shoot 10

Evaluation:
For this shoot the main focus was around the tails of Grimm 'Little Red Riding Hood'. I re-created part of the story of 'Little Red Riding Hood' in a local wood that seemed like it was one iteration of the 'Little Red Riding Hood' fable. The main issue I had when doing the shoot was the temperature, because it was so cold this caused some issues with the model so there was a time restriction on the shoot. Even though this caused some issues with the model because it was so cold it create some breath which caught the light. The images I captured during this shoot worked quite well to capture the essence of 'Red Riding Hood'. This is because it was dark and eerie which mimics the atmosphere of the original story by the Brothers Grimm where the huntsman cuts open the wolf and rescues Red Riding Hood and her Grandmother, then they kill the wolf by placing stones in its stomach seal him back up and then as he tries to run away he can't due to the weight of the stones and dies. They then skin the wolf and leave. This is very different to the version we all heard as a child but my photos which I have taken reflect the original story more.

In this image I used the technique of selective colour and left the red cape of  'Red Riding Hood' still in colour. The reason I have decided to do this is because it creates a more interesting and powerful image which draws the eye to the object of interest.  This shoot was done using a tree to rest the camera against to stop blur and shake. I used a very low speed of 1/30th second at f 2.8 ISO1600. The directional light was a video light which cast good shadows and being continuous means that you can see the scene and how the lighting falls prior to taking the shot. This worked well in making it seem more dramatic and have a sense of a stage presence.

Here we see I managed to capture the breath of the model with the modelling light. This is one of my favourite photos from the shoot because it is by far the most interesting one. The evening was very cold which enabled me to capture the models breath. By not showing the face you get a dramatic affect of knowing it is alive without actually seeing the face of the person.

Work Diary - Shoot 9

Evaluation:
The main objective behind this shoot was to get blank images of a plinth in which I could superimpose the images I took in an earlier model shoot in the studio. Thus re-creating the image taken by the photographer Bob Carlos Clark from his book 'The Dark Summer'. During this shoot I decided to use two lights sources. An on camera flash and a still light off to the side and high up. This created some interesting shadows on the plinth and also matched up with the lighting in the original model shoot. This then made combining the two images easier because there was less manipulation required to make it look like the model belonged in the image. The end resulting plinth photos were very interesting and I feel as if my own re-creation of the image was very close to the original image originally created by Bob Carlos Clark. Even though the model photo I have is not naked she is wearing black which does follow lots of his other work.

The model was shot in a studio using one Bowens Gemini 500 using a snoot to make quite a hard directional light. The camera was set to 1/125th second at f2.8 ISO640.  The plinth was shot at night using off camera flash and 2 Pocket Wizards with a flash gun. I tried to match the direction of the flash in both shoots so that when the images were montaged together they looked part of the same scene. For my image I decided to go with a different view point rather then do the exact same as Bob Carlos to add some level of variety to the image.

This image from the same evening was shot using off camera flash and 2 Pocket Wizards with a flash gun. The flash gun was set up using ETTL. The camera was set to 0.5 second at f2.8. I rested the camera on a grave stone to stop any movement.

Progression:
For my next shoot I have decided that I am going to do a 'Little Red Riding Hood' shoot. This will be mostly selective colour because I think that by having just the red in colour it will create an interesting image if everything else is black and white. I plan to take the inspiration of the images and change the context and the way in which they are shot and put it into a different environment. Also for my shoot I plan to go for a more atmospheric shot where as the below images are less subtle than the images I plan on doing. As I plan to do my images in a forest, my images will be landscape rather then portrait.  The images below are portraitures and I hope to alter this slightly by concentrating on landscapes.

Here we see a rather bloody version of red riding hood in which creates a sense of fear in the viewer of the image.  Whereas in theses image there is a rather obvious fear, I plan to get my fear from the atmosphere of not being able to see what is there leaving it to the mind to some how fill in the blanks with your own worst nightmares.

This image depicts a rather gothic image of red riding hood which make shows a rather interesting take on the typical story of red riding hood. This image brings in a form of religious link to the old masters by the mother and child but whereas the old masters images have a Christianity feel about them this image goes in the opposite direction and has a slightly more satanic feel of the image.
